Canadian Coastal Adventure

Vacation Overview
Travel Canada’s scenic coast and become inspired by its beauty. Throughout Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick, you’ll experience whale-watching, rugged seascapes, scenic lighthouses, and pristine beaches. Start your Canadian vacation in Halifax and enjoy a city sightseeing tour, including Fairlawn Cemetery, the final resting place for more than 100 Titanic passengers. In Baddeck on Cape Breton Island, visit the Alexander Graham Bell Museum and the famous Cabot Trail. Travel through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, an area known for spectacular views of the ocean and mountains. A ferry ride across Northumberland Straight brings you to Prince Edward Island and Charlottetown, where on a guided tour you visit Prince Edward Island National Park and the Anne of Green Gables farmhouse. Cross into New Brunswick and stop in Moncton and Fredericton, New Brunswick’s capital city. Travel to St. Andrews by-the-Sea for a whale-watching cruise. Also stop in Saint John and at Hopewell Rocks, where you’ll learn about the highest and wildest tides in the world, before the conclusion of your vacation in Halifax. An excursion from Halifax takes you to Peggy’s Cove, a picturesque area and one of the most photographed locations in Canada. This tour through Canada’s scenic east coast is an unforgettable getaway throughout a seaside paradise.

Day 1:
Halifax. Enjoy time at leisure to relax or to do some independent exploring. Your Tour Director is on hand this evening to answer any questions.

Day 2:
Halifax. Your tour with a local expert focuses on the major sights: CITADEL HILL with its early 19th-century star-shaped fort; the tree-shaded walks; beautiful residential neighborhoods; and the harbor area, which shows the port’s military heritage. See the Fairlawn Cemetery, the final resting place for more than 100 people who perished on the ill-fated voyage of the Titanic. The afternoon is free, so why not head to the Halifax waterfront, where you can visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, and a myriad of traditional pubs that serve up local ales and Gaelic tunes?

Day 3:
Halifax–Baddeck. Early morning departure for rugged Cape Breton Island, one of the earliest European settlements in North America. Visit a true Nova Scotia FISHERMAN’S HOUSE from the early 1900s. From the crackle of wood in the summer kitchen’s cook stove to the smell of the saltwater breeze at Navy Pool by the ocean, you’ll experience the life of a typical coastal village family. Arrive in Baddeck, the summer home of Alexander Graham Bell, and visit the ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL MUSEUM. Trace the achievements of the great inventor who spent his last years on Cape Breton.

Day 4:
Baddeck. The Cabot Trail. This morning, drive along the famous Cabot Trail, an area first explored by John Cabot just five years after Columbus landed in the New World. Travel through CAPE BRETON HIGHLANDS NATIONAL PARK, climb 1,500-foot capes, skirt rugged coastal headlands, and pass through villages where ancient dialects can still be heard. Before leaving the Cabot Trail, stop at the Acadian fishing village of Cheticamp.

Day 5:
Baddeck–Charlottetown. Head back to the peninsula and continue north to Caribou, where a ferry whisks you across NORTHUMBERLAND STRAIT to Prince Edward Island. For the next two nights, you are in Charlottetown, the provincial capital. A late-afternoon arrival allows you to see more of this colonial town and its restored waterfront.

Day 6:
Charlottetown. Begin the day with guided sightseeing that includes the coastal route through PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND NATIONAL PARK. View sand dunes, salt marshes, freshwater ponds, and some of the finest beaches in eastern Canada. Visit the ANNE OF GREEN GABLES FARMHOUSE, setting of Lucy Maude Montgomery’s famous novel. (CB)

Day 7:
Charlottetown–Moncton. Leave Charlottetown for New Brunswick by way of the 8-mile Confederation Bridge. Tonight it’s the ultimate lobster experience on an optional lobster cruise, where you haul in a lobster trap, learn cooking techniques, observe a cracking demonstration, and savor a complete lobster dinner on board your sailing vessel. (CB)

Day 8:
Moncton–Miramichi. The day begins with a stop at the LA DUNE DE BOUCTOUCHE ECO-CENTRE, developed to preserve one of the few remaining great sand dunes in North America. The white sand dune stretches more than 7 miles across Bouctouche Bay and has remained virtually unchanged since the glaciers melted. It is a haven for wildlife and there is a mile-long boardwalk that winds across the dune, where visitors can observe the wildlife without encroaching on this sensitive area. Later, visit the OLIVIER SOAPERY and learn the traditional craft of soap-making from the 19th century during your “behind the scenes” guided tour of the museum and workshop. Our journey continues to Miramichi, situated along the world-famous salmon-angling river.

Day 9:
Miramichi–Fredericton. Today we make our way to Fredericton, New Brunswick’s capital city. Enjoy a highlight tour that includes the Christ Church Cathedral and the Historic Garrison District. Continue to the St. John River Valley and KINGS LANDING HISTORICAL SETTLEMENT. Disembark to find yourself back in time at a loyalist village complete with creaking wagons pulled by workhorses, the whooshing of hoop skirts, and melodies from fiddlers, along with breathtaking views of the St. John River. Overnight in Fredericton.

Day 10:
Fredericton–St. Andrews–Saint John. This morning, travel to the resort town of St. Andrews by-the-Sea for included WHALE WATCHING. Cruise past rugged seascapes and lighthouses for a true adventure. Explore the unique shops that line Water Street before following the beautiful Fundy Coast to Saint John, the Fundy City. Time in Saint John for independent sightseeing.

Day 11:
Saint John–Fundy National Park–Hopewell Rocks–Halifax. Connect with the land, ocean, and wide-open sky as we travel through FUNDY NATIONAL PARK. Along the way, stop at HOPEWELL ROCKS and learn about the highest and wildest tides in the world, which rise and fall up to 52 feet! Time and tide have carved from the cliffs and coves distinctive sandstone formations topped with trees. Many of the formations have nicknames inspired by their appearance. Look for Lover’s Arch, Dinosaur Rock, Mother-in-Law, and ET, just to name a few. An evening arrival into the modern port of Halifax. (CB)

Day 12:
Halifax. Peggy’s Cove Excursion. Travel to one of the most photographed locations in Canada—PEGGY’S COVE. Explore the cove and allow this picturesque area to enchant you with its beauty, mystery, and charm. Before our return to Halifax, stop in Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to Nova Scotia’s largest fishing fleet, extraordinary architecture, supreme shops, and more. While there, take a self-guided walking tour of the town and visit the FISHERIES MUSEUM. The evening is at leisure for last-minute shopping or a walk along the harbor.

Day 13:
Halifax. The trip ends today with guests departing on individual schedules. Transfers to Halifax International Airport are included.

Avoid the Single Room Supplement

We do not take reservations on a “share” basis because we have found that strangers rarely enjoy sharing a room for the duration of their vacation. Avoid the single room supplement by traveling with a friend. It’s less expensive and much more fun!
